Brief Historical Background of the Department of Educational Technology
The Faculty of Education was established in 1976 with an omnibus Department of Education which ran degree programmes in Arts, Science, Guidance and Counseling and Educational Management. As the Department expanded, three new Departments (i.e., the Department of Teacher Education, Department of Guidance and Management, and the Department of Adult Education and Extension Services) were established. The three Departments started to function effectively in 1979. Under the new dispensation, the Department of Teacher Education coordinated the degree programmes in the Sciences and Humanities. It also coordinated the teaching of Foundation courses to all students of Education. With the establishment of the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences in 1980, the Department of Teacher Education started to run degree programmes in Social Science Education (i.e. Economics and Geography Education). As a result of the expanded programme in the Department of Teacher Education, a new Department of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology (CSET) was carved out from the Department of Teacher Education in March, 1982. Thereafter, the Department of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology catered for the professional training of teachers of Science Education (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics) and teachers of Social Science Education (Economics and Geography). In addition, the B.Ed. Educational Technology programme was housed in the Department of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology after its approval by University Senate in 1984. The B.Ed. degree in Educational Technology programme took off during the 1984/85 Academic Session. In early 2005, based on the proposal of the Faculty of Education Programme and Departments’ Restructuring Committee, recommendations were made to the University Senate for all Arts and Humanities Education
